Really smart breakdown of how epistemic power works in spiritual spaces. The line 'when you dont understand power, you won't know when it's being abused' captures exactly why so many educated people end up in these dynamics. Framing it through power over/to/with instead of just looking for overt coercion is gonna be super useful for people trying to navigate the wellness industrial complex.

There is so much to comment on within this piece. But for the intention of it. I will respond to this one part that spoke to me -- though, through it all I learnt a lot and gained an even greater perspective on a topic that I find so very important. Thank you.

"...He preached that the moment you put someone on a pedestal, you give your power away. There are countless other spiritual teachers and leaders who have taken a similar stance against guru worship, while building an entire spiritual brand around their name, identity, and teachings."

What is interesting is they are using it almost as a tactic to draw you in. To say, "There, there. We aren't like the others. You are safe here." and then continue onward doing the exact same thing but under false pretenses. It almost makes it worse, in my eyes. I have been hurt by new-age spirituality because they promised me it was the answer I was looking for. But rather, I became more disconnected and farther from myself. Lost and disjointed. As if I was just lied to...well, because, I was. And I did put my power away when I thought I was gaining it through the tools and wisdoms they shared. Especially the whole law of attraction! Don't even get me started. Shaming me and making me feel as if I am broken because I am not able to pull a whole new life out of my ass. But disguising it in a beautiful wrapped box and seasoned affirmations. Bringing me back by saying it is "part of the process" , "something must be blocking you" , "why don't you believe that? It is a you problem" and on and on and on. So glad to have stepped out of that bubble and come back to my own power. Phew. Feels much better over here! But it shows how important this conversation is. Thank you, again.
